James 1:26 (AMPC) “If anyone thinks himself to be religious… and does not bridle his tongue… his religion is worthless.”
The Greek word chalinagōgeō (“bridle”) means to restrain, to govern, to control with a bit.
James is not speaking about perfection; he is speaking about discipline.
Your speech reveals your spiritual temperature:
- Cold hearts speak cold words
- Bitter hearts speak bitter words
- Proud hearts speak proud words
- Wounded hearts speak wounded words
- Healed hearts speak healing words
Your mouth is the thermometer of your spirit.
Your speech is the indicator of your spiritual health.
Your vocabulary reveals your level of surrender.
If you cannot control your mouth, your spirituality is counterfeit.
A believer’s maturity is measured not by their gifts but by their governance, especially governance of the tongue.
The tongue as a mirror confronts us with a question:
What does my speech reveal about my spiritual condition?
