Chapter Introduction

Ephesians 4:29 (AMPC) Words Construct Atmospheres, Relationships, and Destinies The tongue is not only a gate but also a builder.

Speech is architectural.

Vocabulary is structural.

Words construct the environments we inhabit, the relationships we sustain, the identities we carry, and the destinies we pursue.

Ephesians 4:29 (AMPC) declares:

“Let no foul or polluting language… come out of your mouth, but only such speech as is good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others…” The Greek phrase sapros logos (“corrupt communication”) means rotten, decayed, spoiled, unwholesome speech. Rotten words create rotten environments. Toxic speech produces toxic atmospheres.

The word oikodomē (“edifying”) means to build a house, to construct, to strengthen, to establish. Words are construction tools. Speech is a building material.

The phrase didōmi charis (“minister grace”) means to impart favor, release empowerment, or give divine assistance. Words can become a means of delivering grace.

This chapter explores four dimensions of the tongue as a builder:

  • Words build atmospheres
  • Words build relationships
  • Words build identity
  • Words build destiny

Your Words Build Atmospheres

Proverbs 18:20 (AMPC) “A man’s [moral] self shall be filled with the fruit of his mouth…” The Hebrew word peri (“fruit”) means produce, harvest, outcome.

You eat the atmosphere you create.

Your words can build:

  • peace
  • safety
  • honor
  • joy
  • clarity
  • order
  • hope

Or your words can build:

  • tension
  • fear
  • confusion
  • division
  • chaos
  • negativity

Your speech shapes every environment you enter.

Your words create the atmosphere you live in.

The tongue as a builder confronts us with a question:

What atmospheres have my words built?
