James 3:6 (AMPC) “The tongue is a world of wickedness… contaminating and depraving the whole body…” James uses the phrase kosmos tēs adikias , “a world (system) of unrighteousness.”

This is not hyperbole. It is a revelation.

The tongue is not merely capable of sin; it is capable of producing systems of sin.

Every category of sin can be committed with the tongue:

  • The tongue lies
  • The tongue flatters
  • The tongue manipulates
  • The tongue deceives
  • The tongue seduces
  • The tongue destroys
  • The tongue justifies sin
  • The tongue excuses rebellion
  • The tongue rationalizes disobedience

The tongue becomes the steering wheel of the soul.

Where the tongue goes, the life follows.

This is why James says the tongue “contaminates and depraves the whole body.”

The mouth is not isolated from the rest of the person.

It is the expression of the heart, the interpreter of the mind, and the activator of the will.

A believer who refuses to confront the patterns of their speech will never confront the patterns of their sin. The tongue reveals the internal world , the hidden motives, the unhealed wounds, the unresolved conflicts, the unrepentant behaviors.

The tongue, as a world of iniquity, confronts us with a deeper question:

What internal systems of sin have been sustained by our speech?
